As the United States welcomes 2026, January 1 is observed as a federal holiday, closing banks, government offices, and stock markets. Emergency services continue to operate, while online banking and ATMs remain functional. Globally, cities like Auckland and Sydney marked the new year with celebrations, though some events were scaled back due to weather and recent crises.

2026 arrives

As the US prepares to welcome 2026, many Americans are checking what will be open and closed on New Year’s Day. The holiday affects daily banking, stock market trading, and government services. People planning payments, travel, or investments are looking for clear answers before January 1. New Year’s Day falls on Thursday this year, and like every year, it brings a pause to most official and financial activity across the country.

Holiday on January 1

New Year’s Day is a federal holiday in the US. On January 1, non-essential federal offices remain closed. Many state and local government offices also follow the same schedule. Public schools are usually closed as well. Emergency services such as police, fire, and hospitals continue to operate. However, most administrative work does not take place. Government services return to normal once offices reopen after the holiday.

Banks remain closed

Banks across the US are closed on January 1. This applies to major national banks and most regional banks. Customers cannot visit branches or speak to bank staff in person on New Year’s Day. However, online banking services and ATMs remain available. Customers can withdraw cash and check balances; although, some services may be delayed. Wire transfers, check deposits, and bill payments may be processed on the next business day. Banks are expected to reopen on January 2.

Stock markets shut

US stock markets do not operate on New Year’s Day. Trading is closed on major exchanges linked to the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones Industrial Average. This includes both buying and selling of shares. Bond markets also follow a holiday schedule and are generally closed or inactive. The closure marks the first non-trading day of 2026. Full trading activity resumes on the next working day.

Global celebrations

While the US observes a holiday, other parts of the world welcome the new year earlier. Auckland was one of the first major cities to enter 2026, with fireworks launched from the Sky Tower. Some events were affected by rain. In Australia and parts of Southeast Asia, New Year’s celebrations were quieter. Authorities reduced events due to recent violence and natural disasters.
