Markets to shut early
The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq will both follow a shortened trading schedule on Wednesday, December 24. According to exchange calendars, trading will end at 1 p.m. ET. Early closures before major holidays are common in US financial markets. These reduced hours often see lower trading volumes. Investors usually finish key trades earlier in the day to avoid delays. The early close applies to all stock trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq. This includes shares, exchange-traded funds, and other listed products.
Bond market
The US bond market will also close early on Christmas Eve. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association has said bond trading will stop at 2 p.m. ET on December 24. Bond markets will then remain closed on Christmas. This affects trading in US Treasury bonds, corporate bonds, and other fixed-income products. Because stock and bond markets close at different times on Christmas Eve, traders working across markets need to plan carefully.
Full closure on Christmas
All major US financial markets will be closed on Thursday, December 25. There will be no trading on the NYSE or the Nasdaq. Bond markets will also remain fully closed on Christmas. No transactions will take place during regular market hours. The closure is part of the official US holiday schedule and applies nationwide.
Markets reopen on December 26
Trading will resume on Friday, December 26. Both stock and bond markets will return to normal operating hours. There are no other market holidays in the final week of December. Wall Street is expected to see normal activity, though volumes may remain light due to the holiday season. The next full market closure will be on Thursday, January 1, 2026, for New Year’s Day. Bond markets will close early again on New Year’s Eve, December 31, at 2 p.m. ET. Stock markets will remain open for a full day on December 31.
