X has restricted Grok’s image generation and editing features to paid subscribers after criticism over sexualized and violent AI content. The move follows U.K. pressure, with officials warning of fines or a possible ban. Reports found Grok was used to create non-consensual deepfakes, raising safety concerns. Regulators are now watching closely to see if the step is enough to prevent further misuse.
X has restricted Grok’s image creation and editing tools to paid users after backlash over disturbing AI-generated content on the platform. The chatbot, built by Elon Musk’s AI company xAI, was widely criticized for being used to create sexualized and violent images, including non-consensual deepfakes.
Users trying to generate images with Grok were met with a message saying the feature is now available only to subscribers. The move comes as pressure mounts on X in the U.K., where officials warned of serious consequences, including heavy fines or even a ban.
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly condemned the spread of AI-manipulated images, especially those involving women and children. He called the content “disgraceful” and backed communications regulator Ofcom to take strong action if needed.
A report by The Guardian found that Grok had been used to create explicit videos of women without consent and graphic images showing women being harmed. These findings fueled concerns that the tool lacked proper safeguards.
Under the U.K.’s Online Safety Act, Ofcom can fine companies up to 10 percent of their global revenue or seek court orders to block apps in extreme cases. The government has also reiterated plans to make the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes a criminal offense.
“The proliferation of these hyper-realistic images has grown at an alarming rate, causing devastating harm to victims, particularly women and girls who are often the target,” The government said. They also added that platforms must get a grip on how AI tools are being misused.
By limiting Grok’s image features to paying users, X appears to be trying to slow down abuse of the tool as regulators watch closely. Whether this step will be enough to satisfy authorities remains to be seen.
