Barry Manilow, 82, announced Monday that he will undergo surgery in late December to remove a cancerous spot on his left lung. Doctors discovered the stage one tumor after the singer experienced a prolonged bout of bronchitis. As a result, his January concerts will be rescheduled.
Manilow shared the news on Instagram, explaining that the discovery was made after an extended period of bronchitis, followed by a relapse. His doctor then ordered an MRI to ensure everything was alright.
“My wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK,” Manilow wrote on Instagram.
The MRI revealed the cancerous spot on his left lung, which requires removal. Manilow expressed gratitude for the early detection.
“The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It's pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early.”
Doctors do not believe the cancer has spread, meaning Manilow will not require chemotherapy or radiation. He anticipates a recovery period involving rest and familiar comforts.
“No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and ‘I Love Lucy’ reruns.” His representatives confirmed the tumor is stage one and the surgery is scheduled for late December. Manilow will spend January recovering.
He plans to resume performing on Valentine's weekend, starting February 12 at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino. His arena concerts will then restart on February 28 in Tampa, Florida.
The ten January concerts, originally scheduled across Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio, will now take place in February.
