Breanna Stewart powers Mist past Phantom to claim first Unrivaled championship in thrilling Miami finale
Breanna Stewart delivered a huge performance with 32 points as Mist BC defeated Phantom BC 80-74 to win the championship of the Unrivaled on Wednesday night in Miami. The victory gave the team the first title in the young league that Stewart helped start with Napheesa Collier.
Stewart controlled the game from the start and finished with a league career high in points. She also added four rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Her free throws late in the game confirmed the win for Mist. Stewart has already won titles at many levels of basketball and this added another one to her long list.
“I pride myself on being a winner and continuing to build a space for players,” Stewart said after the game.
Mist received strong support from the bench as well. Arike Ogunbowale scored 19 points and Allisha Gray added 12. The championship prize was also a big reward, with each Mist player earning $100,000 for the win.
Phantom entered the playoffs as the top seed and pushed Mist throughout the game. Kelsey Plum led Phantom with 40 points on efficient shooting. Kiki Iriafen scored 13 and Tiffany Hayes added 12.
The game remained close for most of the night. Mist led by six points at the end of the third quarter. Under Unrivaled rules, the final quarter has no game clock and teams play until they reach a target score. In this match the target was 79 points.
Stewart calmly stepped to the line near the end and finished the job for Mist, closing the championship win and adding another major moment to her career.
“I am really excited about what this league can become,” Stewart said.
