Veteran broadcaster Dick Vitale is facing another serious health challenge after doctors confirmed his melanoma has spread to his lung and liver. The 86-year-old ESPN analyst is preparing to begin treatment, adding to a series of cancer battles he has already overcome, including lymphoma and vocal-cord cancer. Despite the diagnosis, Vitale remains optimistic, expressing confidence in defeating cancer once again. He learned of the condition after undergoing extensive testing, including scans and a biopsy. Known as “Dickie V,” he has been a passionate voice in college basketball since joining ESPN in 1979 and returned to broadcasting before March Madness in 2025 after a long absence. Beyond his work, Vitale has raised over $150 million for pediatric cancer research through charity efforts. As he begins treatment, the basketball world has rallied behind him in support.
Dick Vitale is fighting another severe battle with cancer as the doctors confirmed on Monday that the melanoma has already spread to his lung and liver. The ESPN broadcaster is set to begin treatment as he takes on cancer once again.
Vitale, who is 86 years old is no stranger to this kind of fight as He has already dealt with cancer several times over the past few years which has stopped him from broadcasting for two years before coming back just ahead of March Madness in 2025. Even with this latest diagnosis, he is not backing down. "I've beaten melanoma. I've beaten lymphoma. I've beaten vocal-cord cancer. I'm 4 for 4 and I'm fully confident I'm going to make it 5 for 5," he said in a statement released by ESPN.
Vitale found out about his diagnosis after he went through several days of tests, including scans and a biopsy. Even though the results were not what he wanted to hear he says he is mentally prepared and determined to get through it.
For decades, Vitale has been one of the most familiar voices in college basketball and is called “Dickie V” affectionately. His energy and love for the game have made him a staple at ESPN since the network's launch in 1979, and he remains deeply connected to the sport even now.
Even through his health struggles and battles with cancer , he has made it a point to help others. He has spent a great deal of time raising money for children battling cancer, a cause that clearly means a lot to him. He has raised more than $150 million dollars for cancer research through an annual gala in his name. "At 86 years young, I've lived a great life, and I'm more motivated than ever to raise money for kids battling cancer," he said.
As he starts this new round of cancer treatment, the basketball community is supporting him once again and hoping for him to come out on top and get back to doing what he loves most.
