Duke and quarterback Darian Mensah have cleared the way for his possible move to Miami after reaching a settlement that ends their legal dispute. The agreement allows Mensah to enter the transfer portal and play for another school in the 2026 season.

Earlier this month, the situation became tense when Duke took legal action to block Mensah's transfer, arguing that his NIL agreement limited his ability to use his name and image with another program. A temporary restraining order was granted, but there were conversations between both sides that continued to lead to a resolution.

Darian extends his sincere gratitude to Duke University for engaging in good-faith discussions and reaching this resolution,” his agency said in a statement. “He wishes the Blue Devils, Coach Diaz, the staff, and the entire fan base continued success in the seasons ahead.”

Duke said it believed enforcing contracts is important for stability in college sports, but acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. “We sought to resolve the matter fairly and quickly,” the school said in its own statement.

Mensah is expected to land at Miami, which is currently searching for a new starting quarterback after Carson Beck finished his college career. The Hurricanes have been linked to Mensah since he made his intention to transfer public.

Mensah was one of the top quarterbacks in college football last season. He threw for nearly 4,000 yards with 34 touchdowns and just six interceptions, leading Duke to an ACC title game win over Virginia. Despite five regular-season losses, his play made him one of the most talked-about names in the portal.

Just weeks earlier, Mensah and Duke had announced he would return for the 2026 season. That plan changed as the transfer market exploded late in the window, with major offers and big-name moves reshaping the quarterback landscape.

Now free to choose his next stop, Mensah’s future appears set to take another high-profile turn, with Miami waiting as the likely next chapter.
