Ed Cooley, the head coach of Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team, has been suspended for one game after throwing a water bottle into the stands following the Hoyas’ 80–77 loss to Xavier on Saturday night in Washington. The bottle struck a young child seated a few rows behind the Georgetown bench.
The incident happened after Malik Mack missed a game-tying shot at the buzzer. Following the loss, Cooley got frustrated and tossed the bottle moments later. He apologized immediately after the game, saying the action was out of character, and added that he planned to reach out to the child and the family personally.
“Really frustrated, and realized I threw my water bottle, and it hit [him] and his mom,” Cooley said during the post-game press conference. “Definitely out of character for me to be so frustrated, but really, that's not called for. I'll call them and make amends to that. Just totally out of character, frustration. So I apologize to the fans, I apologize to our players, and the university. Totally, totally out of character for me to be that way."
Cooley met with athletic director Lee Reed on Sunday, after which the school announced the suspension. The Big East Conference said it supported Georgetown’s decision.
The 56-year-old American basketball coach will miss Monday night’s game against Coppin State, with associate head coach Jeff Battle set to lead the team.
