Joel Embiid out after surgery as 76ers face crucial playoff push without their star
The Philadelphia 76ers will play without Joel Embiid since the star center was diagnosed with appendicitis and is set to undergo surgery in Houston. So far there is no clear timeline for when he will return, leaving a big question mark as the push toward the playoffs. Philadelphia is currently positioned eighth in the Eastern Conference and is fighting to secure a better spot
Embiid has already missed a lot of time this season, playing only 38 games mostly because of ongoing injury management. He was also held out of a recent game against the Detroit Pistons due to multiple issues including illness. Even with limited appearances, he has still been productive, putting up 26.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game this season.
He showed his impact again earlier this week with 34 points and 12 rebounds in a loss to the San Antonio Spurs. But staying on the court has been the bigger challenge. He has not played both games of a back to back at all this season, showing how carefully the team has been managing his minutes.
Frustration has also been building. After missing a game last week, Embiid did not hide how he felt about the decision. “I was pissed off. I wanted to play basketball,” he said, clearly upset about being held out.
That tension also pointed toward the front office, especially Daryl Morey, who handles basketball operations for the team. “I wasn’t allowed to play basketball, so I think this is more of a question of Daryl Morey or whoever makes the decisions,” Embiid added.
Now with surgery ahead and no clear return date, the 76ers will have to figure things out without their biggest star at a crucial time in the season.
