Kelsey Plum balances new Sparks deal, bourbon launch, and growing off-court ventures in busy offseason
Kelsey Plum wrapped up a busy offseason by stepping off the court and into something new, launching her own bourbon with Maker’s Mark while also locking in a fresh deal with the Los Angeles Sparks. The star guard signed a one-year contract worth $999,999 and stayed with the Sparks even though she had higher offers, choosing team building over a bigger paycheck.
Her new bourbon, called “Yam Jam,” will be available starting May 7. Plum worked closely with Maker’s Mark to create it through their Private Selection program, shaping the flavor herself. The drink blends spicy and sweet notes, with a taste inspired by sweet potato pie, something she personally enjoys. “I wanted to do something that's more of a barbecue or holiday vibe, you know, like with the family,” Plum said.
More than just a business move, the bourbon also has a purpose. Part of the sales will go to the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, a cause that means a lot to her because her brother is a firefighter. Growing up in California, she has seen the impact of wildfires and wanted to give back to people who deal with them every day.
On the court, Plum is coming off one of her best seasons. After being traded from the Las Vegas Aces, she averaged 19.5 points and 5.7 assists, proving she is still one of the top guards in the league. She also played a big role off the court, helping negotiate the WNBA’s new collective bargaining agreement as part of the players’ association leadership. “It was a long process, but well worth it, and I’m just super proud of the end result,” she said.
The Sparks used the offseason to build a stronger roster around her, adding experienced players like Nneka Ogwumike and Ariel Atkins, while also bringing in young talent. Plum believes the team is in a much better place now and expects them to surprise people this season.
Along with basketball and bourbon, she is also exploring other ventures, including her own cigar line. With all of that going on, one thing is still unknown, her next shoe deal, after her time with Under Armour ended. For now, Plum seems focused on balancing both her game and her growing presence off the court.
