Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is leaning on his Hall of Fame mentor, Bill Parcells, as the team deals with a major quarterback setback ahead of the AFC Championship Game.

Broncos quarterback Bo Nix suffered a fractured bone in his right ankle during the AFC title game and will miss the rest of the season. Denver is now one win away from reaching Super Bowl 60 and will turn to backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham to lead the offense.

Parcells knows the situation well. He coached the New York Giants to a Super Bowl win in the 1990 season after starter Phil Simms went down late in the year. Backup Jeff Hostetler stepped in and helped the Giants win it all.

Payton and Parcells have a long relationship. Payton worked under Parcells with the Dallas Cowboys before becoming a head coach. The two have stayed close over the years, and Payton has often spoken about how much influence Parcells has had on him.

“I’ve spoken with him. He’s ready to go,” Parcells said to USA Today on Tuesday when asked about Stidham.

Payton has faced a similar challenge before. In 2019, he guided the New Orleans Saints to a 5-0 record while Drew Brees was sidelined with a thumb injury. That experience is expected to help now as Denver adjusts its plan.

The Broncos will not completely change their system. Instead, the coaching staff will focus on what Stidham is most comfortable doing. Parcells believes that approach is key in moments like this.

Stidham has not played in a regular-season game since 2023, which adds uncertainty. Still, Payton has shown confidence in him throughout the season, especially after strong preseason performances.

Denver has already overcome plenty this year. The team moved on from Russell Wilson, built one of the league’s top defenses, ended Kansas City’s long run in the division, earned the top seed in the AFC, and won its first playoff game in ten years.

Now, the challenge is clear. Support the quarterback, avoid mistakes, and stay together as a team. With Payton’s experience and Parcells’ guidance, the Broncos believe the moment is still within reach.

Denver will host New England on Sunday with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.
