Team USA faces bullpen uncertainty as Mason Miller availability questioned before World Baseball Classic final
Team USA is heading into the World Baseball Classic final against Venezuela with a big question about the availability of its closer, Mason Miller in the finals. The championship game on March 17 is a winner-take-all situation, but player availability is not that simple this close to the MLB season.
Miller may not be fully available after already pitching twice in the last five days. Using him again would mean a third outing in a short span during spring training, which teams usually try to avoid. USA manager Mark DeRosa said the decision is still not final. “Not ruled out, not decided,” said Padres manager Craig Stammen, making it clear that Miller’s condition will be checked before any call is made.
The rest of Team USA’s late-inning pitchers are also in a similar situation. David Bednar and Garrett Whitlock both pitched in the semifinal win over the Dominican Republic, which ended 2-1. That means the team may have to be careful again with how they use their bullpen in the final.
Venezuela is dealing with the same kind of pressure. Their relievers had to do most of the work in the semifinal against Italy, covering more than seven innings. Pitchers like Angel Zerpa, Andrés Machado, Eduard Bazardo and Danny Palencia all took the mound to hold the lead.
Unlike Team USA, Venezuela also does not get a rest day before the final, which makes things even harder. Even though their pitchers kept their pitch counts low, the quick turnaround could still affect performance.
In the end, both teams are going into the final with tired but talented bullpens. It now comes down to how much risk they are willing to take in a game where everything is on the line.
