The undefeated UConn Huskies beat Butler, securing a 94-47 win on Sunday’s game at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Huskies' scoreboard was led by the sophomore forward Sarah Strong with 15 points. She recorded seven assists and grabbed six rebounds, and had three steals against the Bulldogs. The 2025 Final Four MVP, Azzi Fudd, scored 13 points in her 22 minutes of action. The other husky who scored in double figures was the freshman forward Blanca Quinonez. She posted 12 points and had 3 rebounds.
This win extended the Huskies' current winning streak to 29 games. Geno’s side has not lost a single game since their loss to the Lady Vols on Feb 6. It’s one of the uconn’s best starts since the 2017 season when they suffered an overtime loss to Notre Dame and ended their 36-game winning streak. The defending champions have won their first 13 games in this season for the first time in nine years.
Butler started the game by converting its first four shots and leading by four points in just three minutes into the game, while UConn’s defense came out flat. However, the Huskies gained momentum as Geno subbed in Blanca Quinonez and Kayleigh Heckel less than five minutes after tip-off. Heckle, who transferred from USC immediately, made an impact by scoring a layup before the media timeout and boosted the team’s energy.
Caroline Dotsey and Addison Baxter led the Bulldogs' scoring by contributing 10 points each.
UConn dominated the game defensively by recording 18 steals. The Huskies forced 29 turnovers on the Bulldogs and scored 48 points off them.
According to the CT insider, Geno Auriemma, the head coach of the UConn Huskies, speaking to the TNT/truTV broadcast during halftime, said, "We’ve been really good at forcing turnovers and then capitalizing on them. We’ve got a group that really likes to play like that. They want to be aggressive,” he added, "I think with a team like Butler, they would use up the whole shot clock if you let them. They’re really disciplined when it comes to that. So, we came into the game, thinking the faster we can make the game, the better for us."
The Huskies will play against Providence on Wednesday, while the Bulldogs' next game is on Jan 4 against Creighton.
