At the Washington premiere of her documentary Melania, first lady Melania Trump reflected on her immigrant background and pride in American citizenship. The film chronicles the weeks leading up to the 2025 inauguration and offers a behind-the-scenes look at her role in public life, marking a rare moment of personal commentary from the typically reserved first lady.
Melania Trump took on a rare speaking role at the world premiere of her documentary, Melania. She used the occasion to reflect on her past and her role in American public life. At the newly renamed Trump-Kennedy Center on Jan. 29, the first lady described herself as an immigrant who is proud of her American citizenship.

The film runs for over 90 minutes and follows Melania Trump during the 20 days leading up to President Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration. Told mainly from her viewpoint, the documentary gives a behind-the-scenes look at her daily tasks, public appearances, fashion choices, and diplomatic work as first lady.

“They will see what my day-to-day life looks like,” Melania Trump said about the viewers of the film. The project presents her not as a political spokesperson but as someone who works with power while staying apart from its loudest arguments.

The premiere attracted a distinctly Washington crowd. Cabinet officials, Republican lawmakers, and political allies filled the venue, creating a formal atmosphere rather than a glamorous one. Among the attendees were House Speaker Mike Johnson, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy. A few celebrities also showed up, including rapper Nicki Minaj.

The setting matched this tone. A black carpet replaced the usual red, and guests posed in front of a simple backdrop featuring the first lady’s name. Flags of U.S. diplomatic partners hung above the entrance, highlighting the event's official nature.

As immigration enforcement continues to be a hot topic nationwide, Melania Trump recognized her own background while speaking briefly to reporters. “I’m an immigrant. I’m coming from a different country,” she said, adding that she is “very proud to be an American citizen.”

Born in Slovenia, Melania Trump moved to the United States in 1996 to pursue modeling and became a U.S. citizen in 2006. Before the premiere, she called for unity amid ongoing protests related to immigration policy and stressed her opposition to violence.

The documentary comes with strong support. Amazon MGM Studios reportedly paid $40 million to acquire the film and committed an additional $35 million for marketing. Melania Trump also started a production company, Muse Films, before the release, signaling a more active role in shaping her public image.

President Donald Trump praised his wife during the premiere, saying her influence is inseparable from his legacy. However, Melania Trump took a more reserved approach when asked how she wishes to be remembered.

“It’s too early,” she said. “I’m not ready to talk about legacy.”

For now, the documentary serves as a carefully controlled reintroduction, framing the first lady through her own perspective, grounded in her personal history rather than political statements.
