On Friday, mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss New York City’s priorities, which will focus on public safety, economic security, and affordability.

TL;DR

Zohran Mamdani will meet President Trump to present NYC policy priorities such as public safety, housing affordability, and transit improvements with the added confirmation of Commissioner Jessica Tisch’s continued role.
New‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is going to the White House to meet with President Donald Trump on Friday. This marks his first official discussion with the administration after his election victory. The meeting is in line with the tradition whereby the incoming mayor of the largest city in the US briefs the president about local priorities.

Mamdani’s transition office said the talk would revolve around three main policy areas: public safety, economic security, and affordability. A senior aide said these issues represent the platform that over a million New Yorkers voted for in the last election and that the mayor-elect is expected to come up with early proposals on how to tackle each of them.

Emphasis on public safety is anticipated to be huge. Mamdani not long ago made it clear that NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch will continue her work in her position, a move that Gov. Kathy Hochul commended. At the press conference held this week, Hochul remarked that the stability in the leadership could be the city's way of showing to the federal officials that it is already handling things well and hence, does not need extra intervention from the National Guard.

On Wednesday, at the memorial’s tour, Mamdani and Tisch met with the media for the first time as a team. In conversation with PIX11 News, Mamdani acknowledged Tisch for what he called significant crime decreases and at the same time brought up the problem of officer retention. According to him, the city cannot just concentrate on how to get more officers but it also has to consider how to retain already experienced ones.

“The main question we are dealing with is not the addition of more officers but the retention of the current ones,” Mamdani stated. Besides, he pointed out that New York must beef up homelessness and mental health services, thus those should not be the areas in which police take the bulk of the burden.

The matter of affordability will be just as important in the conversation with the White House. Mamdani has promised that if at all given the chance, the rent of two million tenants living in rent-stabilized apartments will be frozen right from his first day in office. Other than that, faster and free bus service as well as universal child care are also some of his proposals.

In order to make these changes possible, Mamdani has put forth the idea of increasing the tax that a single person who earns over one million dollars a year has to pay and also, suggesting new business taxes for those are operating in the city. The local team has explained these steps as part of a bigger plan to balance the city’s budget while saving the ‘must-have’ services at the same time.

The White House has not disclosed the details of the schedule. Still, a spokesperson for the administration has informed that the mayor-elect is going to discuss local and federal coordination with the president.

On Friday, the two will have their first meeting that is anticipated to set the mood for the interaction between City Hall and the Trump administration as New York moves into a new political chapter.
