Mayor-elect Mamdani to outline New York priorities in first White House meeting

On Friday, mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss New York City’s priorities, which will focus on public safety, economic security, and affordability.

“The main question we are dealing with is not the addition of more officers but the retention of the current ones,” Mamdani stated. Besides, he pointed out that New York must beef up homelessness and mental health services, thus those should not be the areas in which police take the bulk of the burden.
The matter of affordability will be just as important in the conversation with the White House. Mamdani has promised that if at all given the chance, the rent of two million tenants living in rent-stabilized apartments will be frozen right from his first day in office. Other than that, faster and free bus service as well as universal child care are also some of his proposals.
In order to make these changes possible, Mamdani has put forth the idea of increasing the tax that a single person who earns over one million dollars a year has to pay and also, suggesting new business taxes for those are operating in the city. The local team has explained these steps as part of a bigger plan to balance the city’s budget while saving the ‘must-have’ services at the same time.
