The Powerball jackpot has risen to an estimated $137 million for the Monday, Jan. 12 drawing after no ticket matched all six numbers in Saturday night’s draw.If a winner emerges, they will face the familiar lottery decision: accept the full jackpot as a 30-year annuity or opt for a lump-sum payout of approximately $61.9 million before taxes. The annuity option is paid out over three decades, with annual payments increasing by about 5% each year.
As always, lottery officials caution players about the steep odds. The chance of winning the Powerball jackpot stands at 1 in 292.2 million, making it one of the most difficult prizes to claim in U.S. gaming. Still, Powerball continues to draw millions of hopeful players across 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Interest in the game surged late last year after a historic win in Arkansas. On Christmas Eve, a single ticket sold in the state claimed a record-breaking $1.817 billion jackpot, the second Powerball win in Arkansas history. The winner chose the lump-sum option, walking away with $834.9 million before taxes.
That massive payout helped fuel renewed enthusiasm for the lottery, even as jackpots have since returned to more modest — though still life-changing — levels.
