Advocacy groups are planning widespread “Free America Walkout” protests across California on January 20, marking the first anniversary of President Donald Trump’s second-term inauguration. Dozens of cities in Southern and Northern California are expected to participate.
Protests against President Donald Trump began on January 20, as people across California are organizing to hold walkouts, demonstrations, and other forms of protest against the Trump administration's policies and actions. Thousands of people from many different cities in California will join together for the "Free America Walkout" on this day.

This coordinated action is expected to include walkouts in more than 40 cities in California, as well as many other cities throughout the country. Organizers have said there will be over 600 coordinated walkouts in other cities across the country on this same day.

This year's walkouts in California are following a very difficult beginning for the Trump administration in January 2026. The protests that occurred in early January were in response to the shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis. The protests included people from across the country, and sparked widespread outrage in the United States. In addition to the actions in response to the shooting, protest organizers cited the Trump administration's recent military actions in Venezuela, as well as the interest that the Trump administration has expressed in acquiring Greenland, as reasons for mobilizing people.

Many organizations are coordinating and supporting the protests, including the Women's March, 50501, and FEMINIST, according to the organizers. Organizers say the actions are an expression of the public's discontent with the current political climate in America, as well as an opportunity for the public to demonstrate their support for civil liberties and democratic rights by withdrawing from their daily lives and routines (jobs, schools, etc.). The events will help raise awareness of the damage being done to civil liberties and democratic principles by the Trump administration, and encourage people to take action in response to these violations.
