A search operation by law enforcement in the dark hour of a Tuesday morning in west of Miami-Dade led the shooting of 21-year-old young man in the fatal and the arrest of his brother, a Transportation Security Administration employee who reportedly possessed and promoted child sexual abuse material. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office reported that an incident took place when the deputies were serving a search warrant at a house in the area of Palmetto Estates.
Barata Cristian 25, a warrant for his electronic devices was obtained. At around 5:30 a.m., deputies of the sheriff's office arrived at a house close to Southwest 155th Street and Southwest 102nd Court for their initial contact. According to the sheriff, Stephanie Cordero-Stutz, the deputies found two adults and one child at the front of the house after they had taken them out for safety and the house was the scene of an incident. A short time later a man armed with a weapon appeared at the door and confronted the police. Cordero-Stutz said the suspect ignored the officer's orders to drop the weapon and the officers fired shots in response. The man, whose mother identified as Christopher Barata, died at the scene despite resuscitation efforts.
Authorities have not verified whether the deceased Christopher Barata was part of the investigation. Besides, they didn’t reveal any details about who brought the first shot either. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will file their own report, which is usual in police shooting cases.
After the shooting, deputies took control of Cristian Barata and brought him for questioning. According to the arrest affidavit, he at first denied the request for a lawyer, but later he asked the detectives to talk to him, and at that time he made a full confession, according to the statement issued by the police. Officials charged him with 15 counts of possessing images of the sexual performance of a child and 10 counts of promoting or attempting to promote such material. $87,500 was the amount set for his bail.
This case was opened back in October 2024, when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received several similar cyber tips from an electronic service provider regarding the upload of child sexual abuse material. The Internet Crimes Against Children unit in Miami-Dade County has traced the online activities to the accounts which are allegedly linked to Cristian Barata. They connected 11 tips to one user, including the latest one in September 2025, and finally, they located the user. Investigators said the digital files found in the accounts had dozens of illegal images and videos, in addition to the photographs of Barata that could be used for identification.
At the scene, the brothers' mother, Judy Rodriguez, confronted the sheriff's version of the story and asserted that her son was not armed. While talking to NBC6, she said that the charges made were unbelievable and stated that both her sons used to work for TSA. Besides, Rodriguez declared her plan to take legal action.
TSA publicly stated on Wednesday that it does not tolerate any kind of criminal behavior from the agency. They have taken security measures to limit Barata's access to secure airport areas. Moreover, he has been relieved from duty till the end of the legal proceedings, as per the officials' statement.
